In The News: Ed Commissioner Elia angers parents, teachers with Common Core Opt Out comments

Last month, at an event hosted by the teacher advocacy group Educators4Excellence, New York State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia angered parents and teachers alike by calling parents who opt their children out of Common Core testing “unreasonable” and teachers who support opting out “unethical.” Local State Senate candidate Sara Niccoli, a young mother who has made education reform a key plank of her campaign platform, responded to Elia’s comments in a letter released on the first of September.

Sara Niccoli has announced her bid to unseat Republican George Amedore from State Senate.

Niccoli is a Democrat, farmer and supervisor of the Town of Palentine in Montgomery County. Locally, she is known for her advocacy work as director of the Labor-Religion Coalition of New York State, where her efforts have been to raise minimum wage to $15.
